The Castle of Good Hope is the oldest building in South Africa. Today, the Castle is the only remaining VOC outpost of the old Dutch East Indian Company that is still managed and kept as a military base. As the oldest building in South Africa, it is a symbol of the birth of Western civilization on the subcontinent. The castle was completed in 1679 with the aim of protecting the new settlement from possible attack.
